BETHEL — Fire officials have not determined a cause for a Sunday fire that destroyed 100 round bales of hay.

Bethel Fire Chief Mike Jodrey said Wednesday that the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Forest Service were at the scene at 994 East Bethel Road again in the morning to try to discover the cause of the fire.

Art Lavoie of the Forest Service was unable to find the fire’s cause when he investigated Monday afternoon and had asked the Fire Marshal’s Office to assist.

Jodrey said both investigators were at the site Wednesday but they are now going over their notes before they make a determination.

The fire ignited about 100 round bales of hay that was being stored three bales high behind a barn owned by John and Eva Coolidge.

The Coolidge family was at a cookout nearby when Eva and John’s son Ryan noticed fire coming from the back of their barn about 6 p.m. Sunday.

Coolidge said she and her husband and others including neighbors rushed to hook up hoses to try to contain the fire, which was threatening the adjacent East Bethel Grange Hall.

The bales of hay were worth at least $35 each, Eva Coolidge said.
