Here’s a look at what some members of our online audience had to say about stories in the news so far this week.
On a story about the sentencing of a former Lewiston firefighter who was convicted of assaulting his daughter, Carl Kimball wrote:
“Once again we see that a title or uniform isn’t some magic item to keep humans from doing wrong. People see a uniform or know a person’s title and automatically think trust, then let their guard down. It’s really too bad, because as kids, we were told to trust these people. I’m not saying to distrust them, but be careful of the few that you can’t trust.”
A Sun Journal editorial from Tuesday, April 17 titled, “Voices of many diminished by money of a few,” saw several long comments including one from Claire Gamache of Lewiston.
Gamache writes in part:
“People who are donating billions to political campaigns are not looking to weaken government. They only want to weaken the rules that prevent them from competing honestly, or that prevent them from cheating the public, or abusing their workers or polluting public lands. They are aware that, as individuals, we are powerless to prevent their abuse. But, united behind a strong government we are extremely powerful, more powerful than drug cartels, terrorists and international corporations. Anyone who thinks voting for their candidates will result in less government intrusion or lower taxes is kidding themselves . . . “
A report Tuesday by Staff Writer Scott Taylor that examined how other cities in the U.S. have redeveloped their waterfront areas in light of discussions in Lewiston to do the same saw several enthusiastic comments and this question from Michael Hobbs of South Portland:
“Will they go forward with this new plan? Plans have come up in the past regarding this section of Lewiston, but little has come of those plans. Don’t get me wrong. I am not knocking this plan at all, I love it. I just want the councilors to say this is the plan we are sticking with and move forward with this blueprint. I would love to see the riverfront and Little Canada come back alive.”
A story announcing the Bates College commencement speakers this year will include famed actor and The Godfather Part II star Robert De Niro fetched this one-liner from Philip Laine of Lewiston —
“You talking to me?”
