The workshop is free and begins Wednesday, April 25, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Community Concepts, 240 Bates St. Following sessions are May 2, 9, 16 and 30.
Quit for Life includes instruction on preparing to quit, getting through the first few days, avoiding triggers to start smoking again and staying tobacco-free forever.
Participants receive coping strategies, information on overcoming addiction, preventing relapse, managing stress, exercise and nutrition. To address the addictive nature of nicotine, the program includes an explanation on the benefits of nicotine replacement (patch, gum, nasal spray, inhaler) and Zyban, how they are used and potential side effects.
The group setting provides support through sharing proven methods and the assurance that no one is going through it alone.
Emily Dooling, tobacco coordinator at Healthy Androscoggin, and Maureen Higgins, cancer health outreach educator at The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, will facilitate the workshop.
Space is limited. Preregister by calling Healthy Androscoggin at 795-5990.
