RUMFORD — Getting off to a solid start, the St. Dom’s boys’ lacrosse team simply displayed too much talent on both sides of a sun-drenched surface at the Hosmer Field on Saturday afternoon.
Offensively, it proved to be the Troy Haefele show, who scored six goals and added five assists as the slick Saints remained unbeaten with a 14-1 victory over Mountain Valley.
It was Saint Dom’s who established its superior triangle passing game, attacking at will when the opportunity presented itself. The constant rotation around the perimeter had the Falcon defense scrambling to find proper position.
“We have some steady players who get the job done,” Saint Dom’s coach Dave Haefele said, regarding the positive contributions shown throughout the game. “There’s Troy Haefele and Will Desmarais, plus our goalies Cody Rodrique and Ben Sawyer are always there.”
Saint Dom’s (2-0) dominated with a balanced offense with six scorers, including two goals each by Nick Hatfield, Kenton Ernst and Desmarais. The Saints peppered the offensive zone with 29 shots and maintained pressure on Falcon goalie Coyote Freeman (13 saves).
“I have to credit my guys because they never quit,” Mountain Valley coach Rick White said. “Especially the performance by Coyote Freeman, who was very busy, but maintained his composure. That is a pretty good job by someone who had never played goalie before.”
Mountain Valley (1-2) tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Jon Petrie on a lead pass by Nate Nicols with 5 minutes left in the first quarter.
The Falcons have fallen on hard times, since upsetting Mount Blue 15-5 in its season opener when Kyle Duguay scored six goals and Austin Glover added a hat trick.
St. Dom’s responded with eight goals to ioncrease the advantage to 9-1 at halftime.
A key moment occurred when the Falcons were on a power play in the second quarter, but Rodrigue (two saves) stopped shots by Glover. The Saints strong transition game then scored a short-handed goal.
“This was a good game for us,” said Troy Haefele, who has a scholarship to play lacrosse at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. next fall. “Our younger kids got a lot of playing time, and we will need them later on this season.”
Haefele scored six goals in the Saints 15-0 win against Camden Hills in their season opener.
“It’s difficult to get things going with your best player is on the bench,” White said about Duguay, who sat for a majority of the game with an injured bicep after being slashed. “We’ll be all right. We just need to work on a few things like securing ground balls and positioning. We needed to stop (Haefele) from going to the left because he shoots from the left, but we couldn’t stop him.”
The Saints didn’t allow a shot in entire second half.
