Oxford Dragway opens Saturday
OXFORD — Oxford Dragway is opening the gates for the 2012 season this coming Saturday at 10 a.m. The 2012 season will be the greatest season that Maine’s premier drag strip has seen in decades.
The big news is $100,000. That is the total value of Oxford Dragway’s 2012 points program in purse and contingency prizes. Cash and contingency awards will be handed out weekly and to the track champions at the end of the year. Our program is one of, if not the most lucrative grassroots purse in New England. Plus, at least one team will be awarded the opportunity to become a factory sponsored racer, based on their achievements and performance during the 2012 season.
The featured event this Saturday is the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School Challenge. which is an event conceived and produced by OHCHS senior Joe Gagne as his senior year community service project.
Gagne firmly believes that students need a safe place, off the streets, to experiment with their car, truck, or motorcycle’s performance capabilities. Drag racing is a “no contact” form of motorsport that encourages the use of everyday street vehicles in a controlled environment.
The participating students will be educated on the track layout, the equipment and devices used to time their vehicles on the drag strip, as well as the skills and techniques for safe performance based driving.
Upon completion of their training, students will be offered the opportunity to race against each other in a “bracket” eliminator format, with prizes being offered to the top performers. The overall winner will receive a fully equipped five-drawer tool box.
Admission for participants in the OHHS Challenge is free.
Also on Saturday, we will be having a Test and Tune session for our regular racers, and there is a scheduled Gambler’s Race for later in the day. Standard entry fees apply to Test & Tune. General admission for Spectators is $10 for adult, $5 for 12 to 17 year olds, and kids under 12 free.
For further information, go to www.oxforddragway.com, find the dragway on Facebook, or call the track at 689-5201.
