DEAR SUN SPOTS: How do we find a housekeeper in Lewiston? — Don, Lewiston

ANSWER: Sun Spots knows of one service that advertises in the Sun Journal, Jackie’s Cleaning Service, Lisbon, 784-0632. Other options include ads in the newspaper classifieds, as well as the Internet.

You could also ask your neighbors and friends for personal references. The last time Sun Spots had a related question, many readers wrote in to suggest someone. They undoubtedly will again.

You should be particularly vigilant when hiring anyone who will come into your home in a position of trust. Be sure to check references thoroughly.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: What does the U.S. Postal Service charge per piece for business reply mail, where the postage is paid by addressee? Thanks! — Gene, Lewiston

ANSWER: There is no one rate. Rather the rates vary depending on the number of replies expected by the business.

According to usps.com, some businesses pay an annual permit fee, as well as an account maintenance fee; others do not.

When Sun Spots was a postal clerk, she processed these envelopes for one local business. It “deposited” funds into an account, which was held at post office to pay for the envelopes as they were returned.

When the envelopes showed up in the morning mail, they were counted. The charge for each envelope, which varies from what a private customer would pay, was then debited from their account.

Of course, Sun Spots worked at a one-person office. The procedure might be slightly different at a larger facility, with automation possibly coming into play.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the April 12 inquiry, Lobsterland was located just around the corner off Pine Street on Blake Street, behind and “underneath” the old Priscilla Theater.

I’m really surprised you couldn’t find anyone old enough in your office who could remember. It was a great restaurant for the time. I believed it later moved out to the shore of Tripp Lake and was then owned and operated by Rose Hemond and her husband, who was a reporter for WMTW TV. — Frank Folsom, fffolsom@gmail.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots did find at least one person who was old enough — although she’s not sure John appreciates that distinction — to remember Lobsterland, and he consulted another. Undoubtedly many other Sun Journal employees remember it as well, but readers seem to enjoy reminiscing about businesses of days gone by, so she prefers to let them respond with tales such as the one that follows.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I just read the inquiry in your column regarding the location of the Lobsterland restaurant in Lewiston. It was located on Blake Street where the new housing unit is located now.

My memere lived across the street, and when I would visit her on weekends she would send me across the street to pick up yummy lobster rolls and French fries for our supper. This inquiry brought back many pleasant memories for me. — Diane via email
