AUBURN — “This is amazing. It’s so beautiful,” Alivia Bergeron said when she saw her newly renovated bedroom for the first time. “The pink is like lighting up my room. And it sparkles. It’s just magical.”
The 7-year-old Auburn girl’s grandmother won the bedroom makeover of an elementary school student’s dreams late last month. On Sunday afternoon, the Park Avenue Elementary School first-grader saw her finished room for the first time.
In an effort to raise money for an end-of-the-year overnight camping trip for the entire sixth-grade class, the school held an Extreme Bedroom Makeover raffle. More than 650 tickets were sold for the fundraiser organized by the school’s PTO with the help of sixth-grade teacher Lisa Begin and Principal Vickie Gaylord. Each ticket sold for $3.
Begin said PTO member Wendy Brown was instrumental in getting the effort organized and off the ground. Even though her own child was in fifth grade, Begin said Brown loved the idea of taking the entire sixth-grade class camping and saw it as a wonderful way to celebrate the end of elementary school for the students.
“Wendy is a very involved parent, and she wants the best opportunities we can offer for all students,” Gaylord said. “The success of this fundraising event shows the importance of the relationship and the support between home, school and community.”
The entire class will camp overnight at the YMCA Camp of Maine in Winthrop. Begin said students will be participating in a ropes course event, environmental education, kayaking, canoeing and maybe even swimming if the weather permits.
That night parents are invited to join their children for a camp dinner and sing-along around the campfire.
Nearly 20 local businesses helped make the school’s first-ever Extreme Bedroom Makeover such a huge success, according to Gaylord and Begin. Thanks to donations ranging from supplies and furniture to gift cards and volunteers, the school raised more than $2,000 toward the sixth-grade camping trip.
Donors included Morin the Painter; Bed, Bath & Beyond; Bedderest; OfficeMax; Sherwin-Williams; Lighting Concepts; Electrical Systems of Maine; Floor Systems; Dan Dube; Agren Appliance; Lowe’s; local cabinetmaker David Fields; Residence Inn; Walmart; Target; Reny’s; and Kohl’s Department Store.
“I did it just to support the kids going on field trips. They don’t seem to have the trips like they used to,” Alivia’s grandmother, Kathy Bergeron, said of why she bought tickets. “We never win anything. I was really shocked when they called me on the phone.”
