FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners agreed Tuesday to have custodian Greg Roux buy a new air conditioner for a room where computer and phone servers are housed.

County Clerk Julie Magoon said Roux has gotten two quotes that are between $2,000 and $3,000.

Commission Chairman Gary McGrane of Jay said the unit would be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week to keep the room at a steady temperature and to prevent moisture from building up and causing corrosion.

Magoon said along with computer servers, the room also houses the control panel for the phone system.

County staff did some rearranging to expand their office spaces on the main floor to serve people. That included moving servers out of upstairs offices to the ground level. The space was freed up after the District Attorney’s Office staff moved out of the basement to rental space a few buildings down on Main Street.

“We have two quotes. He has to get one more before we can do anything,” Magoon said. The county’s practice is to solicit three quotes on an item or service that falls under the $10,000 threshold that requires the county to officially go to bid.

There is about $3,000 left in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning line that could be used to buy the air conditioner, she said.

“I’m willing to spend $1 to save $100 anytime,” McGrane said of buying the air conditioner.
