LEWISTON — Tanner Hubbard didn’t start the boys’ lacrosse game Saturday night at Lewiston High School.
That’s not a normal situation for the junior attack, so his reaction was the one you might expect. Hubbard kept it all inside, though, and took out that frustration on Cony.
Hubbard had two goals and two assists in the first period once he did get into the game, accounting for four of Lewiston’s five early strikes and paving the way to an 8-1 rout.
“We came out strong because coach (Bill Bodwell) put some wrinkles into the starting lineup, and we all wanted to make a good impression,” Hubbard said.
Chris Johnson, Brandon Tiner and Max Bolduc each added a goal in the opening stretch.
The Blue Devils peppered the Rams with 27 shots in the first half on their way to a commanding 7-1 lead.
Lewiston (3-3) ended a three-game losing streak. The Devils fell to Messalonskee, Brunswick and Mt. Ararat, three of the top teams in the KVAC and Eastern Class A.
“We played well against Brunswick. We played well against Mt. Ararat,“ Bodwell said. “We’ve been playing well. Cony throws a zone (defense) at you and it kind of slows you down a little bit.”
Tiner and Johnson joined Hubbard with two goals each for Lewiston.
Dakota Bowie scored Cony’s lone goal on a second chance with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter.
By then, Lewiston’s reshuffled lineup had made its point.
“I like to get everybody an opportunity to play,” Bodwell said. “We’ve been working on some stuff in practice trying to get our offense going. I think right now our defense is playing really well. Our offense is starting to get a little better every day. We’re still trying to see how guys fit.”
Shawn O’Connell scored the lone goal of the second half.
Lewiston goalies Tom Lepage and Andrew Gaumont made two saves apiece to back up a defensive effort paced by Steven Patrie, Caleb Johnson, Ethan Melvin and Eric Michaud.
