LISBON — Ryan Brewer drove in Aaron Boyington with the winning run in the eighth inning, giving the Greyhounds a 6-5 victory in a baseball game Saturday.

The game was tied at 5-5 going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Brewer’s single brought Boyington across with the winning run.

Winning pitcher Jo Osmond with the distance, and Monmouth’s Brian Wilson had two hits.

Hampden 4, Mt. Blue 2
HAMPDEN — Hampden Academy scored two runs in the fifth inning to shake Mt. Blue loose with a 4-2 victory in a baseball game Saturday.
 
Hampden pitcher Dillon Corliss pitched six innings and got the win on the mound before being relieved by Matt Palmer in the sixth. Palmer also had a double. Teammate Fred Knight had two one-run singles.
 
Hampden (3-4) built a 2-1 lead after two innings.
 
For the Cougars (3-4), Bradley Jackson and Blake Hart each punched in a one-run double. Catcher Andrew Pratt and Jackson each had two hits.
 
Cony 2, Lewiston 1
AUGUSTA — Although Luke Cote struck out six batters and gave up just two walks, Lewiston couldn’t make its six hits work, allowing Cony to escape with a 2-1 victory in a baseball game Saturday.
 
The Rams (3-4) scored a run in the first and second innings and held on the rest of the way thanks Ryan Edwards pitching and Cony’s defense. Lewiston’s only run came in the first inning.
 
For Lewiston, Cote also had three hits. Cony’s Chandler Shocetak had two hits, including a double.

Erskine 5, EL 1

SOUTH CHINA — Ryan Pulver helped his own cause as he picked up the win on the mound and scored twice in the Erskine Eagles’  5-1 baseball victory over Edward Little.

The Eagles’ offense quickly got to EL starter Nate Blais as they scored three times in the bottom of the first inning. They added a run in the second to make 4-0.

Edward Little got on the board in the top of the fourth, but Erskine would answer back in the bottom half with an RBI double from Tom Grady.

The Red Eddies had a rally going in the top of the fifth with one out, but Schyler Skates came in relief and was able to get the Eagles out of the jam without allowing a run   

Boys’ lacrosse

St. Dom’s 15, Mt. Blue 0

FARMINGTON — Troy Haefele scored two goals and earned six assists, and Chris Finlay added four goals as St. Dom’s vaulted past Mt. Blue with an easy 15-0 victory in a boys lacrosse game Saturday.

Anthony Fagone had three goals and one assist, and teammates Nick Hatfield and Kenton Ernst each had two goals. Grant Carrier rounded off the scoring with his goal.

Goalie Ben Sawyer made four saves and St. Dom’s outshot the Cougars, 29-11.

Softball

Fryeburg 11, Yarmouth 0

FRYEBURG — Sarah Harriman allowed just a first-inning single by McKenzie Gray and struck out seven to lead Fryeburg Academy to an 11-0 softball victory over Yarmouth (2-5) on Saturday.

Maggie McConkey belted a solo home run over the left-centerfield fence to lead the Raiders’ 11-hit attack. Carla Tripp, Kylie Locke and Maddie Smith each had two hits for Fryeburg (6-1). Maddie Pearson and Emily Davidson each had a double.
 
Fryeburg scored a run in the first as Tripp singled, stole second and later scored on a Yarmouth error. The Raiders plated four runs in the third inning, keyed by a Tripp single, Pearson doubled and and had two errors.
 
The Raiders added four runs in the fifth inning on two walks, two errors and singles by Locke and Smith. The Raiders scored twice in the sixth as McConkey homered, Davidson doubled and Locke singled.
 
Erskine 4, EL 3
SOUTH CHINA — Despite hammering out nine hits, Edward Little (2-6) could not shake off Erskine Academy as the undefeated Eagles (8-0) escaped with a 4-3 victory in a softball game Saturday.
 
The Eagles built a 4-1 lead after two innings.
 
But Edward Little slowly closed in, scoring runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings. EL pitcher Kory Norcross double and had three hits for the day. Melissa Paione had two hits.
 
For stubborn Erskine, Alison Gauvin and Hattie Welch each had a pair of hits and a double.
 
Cony 12 Lewiston 0

AUGUSTA — Arika Brochu did it all for the Cony Rams. She struck out four in a complete-game effort and batted in one in a 12-0 softball victory over the Lewiston Devils on Saturday.

After a scoreless first inning, the Rams put four runs on the board in the bottom of the second. The offense continued to roll in the third as Cony added six more runs to their total. In the fourth, they added the the final two runs.

Michelle Malia went four innings for the Blue Devils, striking out four batters. Lewiston Falls to 0-7 on the season.

 
Baseball

Maine swept

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of Maine baseball team dropped a pair of games to Albany on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears fell in the first game, 9-5, before dropping the second game, 12-2.

Maine falls to 22-21 on the season and 8-6 in America East play. Albany improves to 16-27-1 and 10-6 in conference play.

The Black Bears Michael Fransoso and Fran Whitten each had two hits in Game 1. In Game 2, Fransoso also had two hits.

Softball

Maine takes two

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The University of Maine softball team clinched a spot in the 2012 America East Tournament after sweeping Hartford on Saturday afternoon. Maine won the first game 5-1, while taking the second one 2-1.

Maine improves to 17-27-1 on the season and 8-8-1 in America East play. Hartford falls to 9-43 overall, 3-14 in conference play.

The Black Bears got the offense rolling early in Game 1 as they plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. EmJ Fogel led off the game with a single into left field before advancing to second when Jessica Burk followed with a walk. Jennifer Eberhardt reached on a fielder’s choice, which erased Burk at second but advanced Fogel to third with one out. Fogel would then score on the play on a throwing error by the Hawks’ second baseman. Hilary Kane kept the rally going for Maine as she stroked a double down the left-field lane, scoring Eberhardt.

Men’s rowing

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Bates men’s rowing team took the bronze medal in the varsity eights grand final for the second straight year on Saturday at the New England Rowing Championships.

Bates cleared runner-up University of New Hampshire 5:55.877 to 5:57.979 to win the second of two preliminary heats for MV8s, also defeating WPI, Wesleyan, UMass-Amherst and Coast Guard in the process.

The Bobcats advanced to the MV8 grand final and claimed the bronze medal, getting edged for the second straight year by Williams (6:06.524) and Trinity (6:08.425).

Women’s rowing

WORCESTER, Mass. — The No. 2 nationally ranked Bates womens’ rowing team finished second to rival and top-ranked Williams in the grand final two varsity eights races. The Bobcats also took third place in the other, including second place in first varsity eights for the second straight year on Saturday at the New England Rowing Championships.

The Bates WV8 won its preliminary heat with a time of 6:39.293, ahead of runner-up Holy Cross (6;43.954).  Advancing to the grand final, Bates faced Williams for the first time this season and lost by margin of 6:45.314 to 6:55.289. Holy Cross was third in 7:02.015, followed by Wellesley (7:03.243), Coast Guard (7:04.301) and Trinity (7:10.080).

Bates’ second varsity eight (W2V8) came out ahead of runner-up Trinity (7:09.269) to win its prelim in 7:04.171. The Bobcats went on to place third in the W2V8 grand final, trailing only Williams (7:02.457) and Holy Cross (7:10.727) at 7:13.399; rounding out the field were Trinity (7:16.149) in fourth, Wesleyan in fifth and New Hampshire in sixth.

Pless shines for Bates
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Bates junior David Pless remained undefeated against Division III competition in the shot put, hammer throw and discus throw, leading the Bobcats to third place among 27 point-scoring teams Saturday at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships at MIT.
Pless’s top effort in the hammer throw was 187-9, 20 inches beyond runner-up Chinedum Umachi of MIT. He won the shot put at 57-7.75.
Enos placed second in the shot put with a new career-best, 53-5.75; he also finished seventh in the hammer (162-9).
