PARIS — A Woodstock man will serve a year and 90 days for his role in stealing and setting fire to a car in West Paris last year.

Carl Richard Lang, 22, pleaded guilty to theft, burglary of a motor vehicle and aggravated criminal mischief Tuesday in Oxford County Superior Court. He’ll serve another year for violating his probation.

Last month, Lang was indicted on 12 counts, including arson and multiple theft and burglary charges. Most, including arson, were dropped Tuesday and Lang was charged with aggravated criminal mischief for burning the car. Nine other charges were dismissed as well.

According to Assistant District Attorney Richard Beauchesne, police found a car burning in West Paris last October. The owner had parked it in a hospital parking lot before going into work.

Police investigating found Carl Lang and Benjamin Smith, 22, of Paris, who both admitted to breaking into cars for loose change and eventually stealing the car, but Lang and Smith said the other was solely responsible for burning the car.

Lang was sentenced to five years, with all but one suspended, and will serve one year for burning the car and 90 days for the theft and burglary charges, as well as a year for violating his probation. Once his jail sentence is up, Lang must pay $9,050 to the car’s owner.

Smith is set to be arraigned on June 15. Smith was not charged with arson.
