PARIS — More than a mile of Streaked Mountain Road was shut down early Saturday afternoon for about five hours when two pickup trucks collided, sending six injured people to two hospitals, police said.

Driver Dillon Soucy, 18, of Oxford, the most seriously injured, had to be extricated by Paris and Oxford firefighters, Paris officer Tim Gamache said.

“He was pinned around the steering wheel pretty bad,” Gamache said.

Soucy was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

The driver of the other truck, Shawn Brust, 40, of Norway; his passenger, Kevin Ellingwood, 48, of South Paris; and Soucy’s passengers, Herbert May, 39, and his daughter Kelsey Hunt, 10, and niece Desirae May, 13, all of Oxford, were taken by PACE Ambulance to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, Gamache said.

He said Herbert May suffered a broken arm, the two children had abrasions, and Brust and Ellingwood were treated and released. Ellingwood said by email late Saturday evening that he suffered bruised ribs and broke his sternum in two places.

The accident happened at 1:05 p.m. on Streaked Mountain Road, also known as Route 117, half a mile before the Stock Farm Road.

“It was a bad one, but everyone seems to be pulling through,” Gamache said at 5 p.m. as Maine State Police troopers continued to reconstruct the accident.

Gamache said Brust was driving toward Paris in a 2002 Ford F-250 Super Duty Quad Cab pickup truck and hauling a Kubota farm tractor on a trailer. Soucy was driving a 1996 Ford Ranger Extended Cab pickup truck toward Buckfield.

“The hood on Dillon’s truck suddenly flew open, which caused him to veer into the other lane and hit (Brust’s) truck head-on,” Gamache said. “We have no idea why the hood flew up.”

Everyone was wearing safety belts. Both trucks, which were demolished, remained upright and the farm tractor remained on the trailer, the officer said.

Once Soucy was cut free, he was taken to a nearby landing zone and placed aboard the medical helicopter.

Traffic was rerouted around the scene on Brett Hill Road.

No citations were issued, Gamache said.
