DEAR SUN SPOTS: Here’s an old murder mystery I’m trying to track down for a genealogy friend. Please let me know if you’ve ever heard of it.
Henry G. Brown was born in Rumford but lived in Hartford for many years. His son, Charles, was supposedly murdered sometime after 1900. The story goes that he disappeared while working at a lumber mill, and his body was found frozen under the floor boards months later.
A co-worker named Roscoe “Shorty” Childs was acting in a very suspicious manner when the body was found.
I don’t know what town this occurred in, though Roscoe was working at IP in Livermore in 1918.
Thank you for any help anyone can give me. — Marjorie Osterhout, [email protected]
ANSWER: Sun Spots figures that you and the other genealogist already searched online, but she checked again anyway. Unfortunately, the names are too common and there is too little information to limit the search. Hopefully some readers might recall hearing this story from grandparents or other elders.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: First, I enjoy reading your helpful column every day.
Second, I lost our motorcycle journal somewhere, and I am very upset with myself because I had written about our 25-plus bike trips over the years.
The front of the wire-bound hardcover book had a young boy and girl on it.
We would be thrilled to get it back. A good Samaritan is worth a million words. Please call 890-3622. Thank you. — No Name, West Paris
