LEWISTON — Newfoundland’s world-famous traditional band, Ennis, will perform Tuesday, May 22, at the Franco-American Heritage Center.

The Juno Award-winning group will also bring its contemporary voice, ?avored by deep roots and Celtic in?uences, to Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage on Wednesday, May 23; and Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday, May 24. 

Making up the band are sisters Maureen Ennis, lead vocals, songwriting and acoustic guitars; and Karen Ennis, backup vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin and tin whistles. The third member is Mark Murphy, backup vocals, acoustic guitar and percussion.

Maureen and Karen, powerful and humorous storytellers, offer a broad mix of Maureen’s original songs and uniquely interpreted tunes and ballads. They have released seven albums (one gold) and have been a part of countless compilation CDs (two gold).

The two have shared the stage and recorded with the Chieftains and toured with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jann Arden and Colin Linden. Touring highlights include playing for Canadian troops in the Middle East, the millennium celebration in St. John’s, Newfoundland; the Winnipeg Folk, Stan Rogers Folk and Strawberry Music festivals; Merlefest; and Cleveland and Pittsburgh Irish festivals. 

Maureen and Karen spent much of last year in Nashville and then returned to Newfoundland. They are working on a new folk/Celtic CD based on the seven- generation history of their family. The collection of songs will include originals as well as traditional Celtic songs and instrumentals passed down to them.

Curtain is 7 p.m. at the Franco Center and Skye; 7:30 p.m. at Unity. Jam sessions are slated one hour prior to curtain at Skye and Unity.
