After a loss and a tie to the Black Flies the previous week, the Gladiators came out determined to prove that they are a team to be reckoned with despite being the new kid on the block.

Game 1 began on a rough note as the Tomahawks took the early lead on a bleeder to the outfield, a walk, and RBI singles by King and Lavigne to make it 3-0 off Gladiators starter Austin Gilboe. Gilboe ended the threat with a strikeout, one of six for him on the day.

The Gladiators began the second inning well when Josh Joy singled but was picked off on an excellent move by Tomahawks starter Poole. Noah Bonsant then laced a two-strike pitch to center and James Sinclair was plunked, but both runners were stranded.

Gilboe’s control wavered briefly to start the bottom of the second, sandwiching in a punch-out between two walks before giving up a single to Hasson. Coppetta grounded to second forcing in the second run to make it 5-0 Tomahawks. Gilboe poked a two-out single to right, stole second and scored when Gibson Harnett handcuffed the second baseman for a 5-1 Tomahawks lead.

Gilboe then used only three pitches to get the through the third despite allowing a single to Marean when the Gladiators turned a 6-3-5 double play.

Joy and Bonsant had back to back doubles to open the fourth, scoring one off reliever Lavigne before the Tomahawks chopped the rally short with a double play of their own. Gilboe continued his mastery in the fourth retiring the side with the help of two whiffs.

Despite singles by Gilboe and Ben Hanna in the top of the fifth, the Gladiators failed to plate a run. Joy relieved for the Gladiators in the fifth, but got the cold shoulder from Tomahawk hitters as they scored twice more on hits by Hasson, Poole and King to make it 7-2. Bonsant and Sinclair added singles in the sixth, but it was too little too late as they scored just once for a 7-3 final.

Poole took the win for the Tomahawks. Gilboe grabbed the loss for the Gladiators.

The second game of the twin bill turned out to be a polar opposite of the first when the Gladiators came out of their corner punching. Starter Nate Howard made quick work of the Tomahawks lineup, stranding one, on only eight pitches.

Gladiator bats made a statement in the bottom of the first. Gilboe singled and swiped second before Howard grounded though the infield for a base knock. Josh Joy then followed with a mammoth blast to deep left center for an inside-the-park home run and three RBIs. Bonsant later singled and scored to make the score 4-0 Gladiators after one.

Howard was on his game on the mound, striking out the side in the second. He also had a 1-2-3 inning in the third to keep the Tomahawks off the board. Tomahawk singles by Hasson and King and opportunistic baserunning led to two runs despite three strikeouts by Howard. He finished with eight on the day.

Tomahawks starter Hasson didn’t fare as well, being lifted for Sullivan to start the Gladiator third. Sullivan kept Gladiators bats quiet in the third and fourth, giving up only a single to Nick Lombardi and retiring the next seven straight.

Howard took the 5-2 win for the Gladiators. Sinclair notched the save. Hasson absorbed the loss for the Tomahawks.
