LEWISTON — Melanson Paving started the Elliot Ave. Little League season with three straight wins, but then had lost two straight coming into a Tuesday rematch with United Ambulance.
In a tense pitchers’ duel, Melanson eked out a 3-2 win.
Damien St.Pierre took to the hill for Melanson determined to change its fortunes. After striking out the first batter, St.Pierre gave up a single to Tommy Turgeon, who later scored thanks to two errors to put United up 1-0.
Evan Cox wasted little time in the bottom of the inning, stroking a triple to left field. He later scored on a wild pitch to tie things up at one.
Both United pitcher Kaleb Morrisette & St.Pierre kept things quiet over the next couple innings, trading scoreless frames. United eked out a run in the top of the fourth on two infield errors, almost scoring another if not for a pinpoint throw from shortstop Dalton Wing to snuff a run.
Now down 2-1, Melanson rallied when Wing opened the inning with a single, then stealing both second and third before scoring on an RBI single by St. Pierre.
St. Pierre also stole both bases to end up on third. St.Pierre took off for home on a passed ball. The relay from catcher Jayden Webster was high, causing Morrisette to leap and try to bring the ball down for the tag. Meanwhile, St.Pierre slid under the tag but clipped Morrisette’s leg causing him to collapse in pain. After a few tense moments, the game resumed, but Morrisette was relieved by Marciano Webster who ended the threat with a strikeout.
Wing relieved St.Pierre in the fifth and struck out the six batters he faced to earn the save. St.Pierre earned the win, his second of the season, striking out 11 along the way and giving up only one hit. Wing had two hits for the victors, while C.J. Santomango and Davim Jackson each had singles for Melanson.
Elias Atkins ended Melanson’s rally in the fourth with a nice running catch off the bat of Gabe Escobar.
Melanson bettered its record to 4-2. United falls to 3-2.
