100 years ago, 1912
His feet and hands bound to his body with ropes and towels tied over his face so he could not make an outcry, Guy G. Gilmore of Auburn, aged 20, was found helpless on the floor of a lunch cart at the foot of Ash street, near the corner of Lisbon, shortly after one o’clock Wednesday morning. Gas was escaping from the heater, the flames having been extinguished by the robbers, and the interior of the cart was filled with the odors. Young Gilmore was practically unconscious when found by John F. Campbell. Less than $8 was secured by the robbers, who escaped.

The Lewiston Police Department will sponsor an “amnesty week” for people possessing city traffic signs, cones, barricades and other city property. During the week of May 18 through May 25, anyone having any of these objects is being encouraged to return the items to the city. No questions will be asked, according to Maj. Laurent F. Gilbert Sr. He said the dispatch area of the Lewiston Public Works Department on Willow Street has been designated as the drop-off point.
