LEWISTON — A plan to replace parallel parking along Park Street and narrow traffic lanes will go forward, according to City Administrator Ed Barrett.

Park Street is two lanes one way from Main Street to beyond Kennedy Park. The road has parallel parking on either side up to Pine Street.

Barrett said councilors reviewed a proposal Tuesday night to remove one lane from Pine to Spruce Streets, replacing it with angled parking on both sides of the street.

“It has an added benefit for people going to City Hall,” Barrett said. “Now, there’ll be more parking and they won’t have to walk across the street to get in. They can just park and walk right in.”

The city will remove one lane on Park Street between Main and Pine streets as well, but will replace it with a dedicated bicycle lane.

The goal of both changes is to slow traffic and stop people from trying to go north on the southbound-only street.

“Especially between Spruce and Pine (streets), we think angle-in cars parked on both sides of the road will make it more obvious that it’s a one way road,” Barrett said.

Barrett said there’s no digging or construction involved with the project, just repainting lines on the street. That work is scheduled to be done later this summer.
