JAY —  Police arrested a local man Friday on a felony charge of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing the reporting of a crime.

Michael Beall, 27, is being held without bail at Franklin County Detention Center, Jay Police Chief Larry White Sr. said

When Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier of the Jay Police Department and Livermore Falls officer Steve Wilkinson responded to a 7:08 a.m. call Friday for domestic assault on Main Street in Jay, they found a woman at the home “who appeared to be badly beaten,” White said in a release.

The woman was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital by ambulance, treated and later released, he said.

Fournier was met at the scene by Beall who told police he had been involved in an altercation outside the home with an unknown person.

The woman told police Beall had struck her in the face and head during the assault at about 8 p.m. Thursday. She said he tried to suffocate her and at some point slashed her with a knife that injured her neck and thumb. The woman had a bite mark on her arm where it’s believed he bit her, White said.

During the attack, police say she tried to open a second floor window to jump out because she feared for her life but was pulled back into the apartment by Beall. He apparently would not let her call for help, kept her in a bedroom and slept by the door to prevent her from leaving.

Police say no one else lives in the apartment complex so no one heard the incident.

After being arrested, Beall was transported to the hospital by Fournier for minor injuries that he received during the incident.

Beall also faces a charge of violation of administrative release. The District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case to determine if any other charges will be made, White said.

Jay Detective Richard Caton assisted Fournier in the investigation.
