BUCKFIELD — Buckfield chalked up two convincing victories in one afternoon as the Bucks dusted off Valley with 10-0 and 15-4 victories in a doubleheader Saturday.
In Game 1, the undefeated Bucks (11-0) went right to work on the Cavaliers (4-6) in the five-inning game. Buckfield used a 12-hit attack and winning pitcher Cody White threw a one-hitter.
Dustin Damon walloped a two-run homer in the seven-run fifth inning that allowed the Bucks to go home early. Owen Bennett, catcher Alan Lebel and Garrett Hamann each had two hits.
In Game 2, the Bucks were more feisty at the plate, hammering out 18 hits and shortening the game to six innings. Winning pitcher Jonah Williams struck out 10 batters and had two hits.
The Bucks shined in the second and fourth innings when they erupted with five runs in both innings.
Averill had smacked a pair of doubles and singles and scored four runs. Lebel chipped in with three hits.
For the day, Buckfield unleashed seven doubles.
Gould 12, Hebron 2
BETHEL — Winning pitcher Jeb Clarke struck out eight batters and Gould Academy unleashed an 18-hit attack as the Huskies chewed up Hebron Academy with a 12-2 victory to win the MAISAD baseball championship Saturday.
The Huskies finished the season at 10-5 and scored three runs in three innings to bag Hebron.
Alex Manning and Spencer Couch each doubled for Gould. Connor Huggins and Cody Bullen each had three hits.
Boys’ lacrosse
Oak Hill 16, Mt. Blue 2
FARMINGTON — Freshman Kyle Flaherty recorded four goals and an asisst to lead Oak Hill to a 16-2 rout over Mt. Blue in boys’ lacrosse action Saturday.
Junior Chris Ames notched his first career varsity goal for the Raiders. Junior Jon Averill contributed three goals and three assists.
Ryan Rouillard scored both of the Cougars’ two goals.
Goalie John Andrews made 18 stops for Mt. Blue, while freshmen Matty Martin and Kyle Tervo combined for three stops for Oak Hill.
Softball
Camden Hills 8, Leavitt 1
TURNER — Camden Hills erupted with six runs with two outs in the second inning and sealed Leavitt’s fate with an 8-1 victory in a softball game Saturday.
Camden Hills built a 2-1 lead after two innings before going to town on the Hornets (8-4) in the second inning.
Jen Farley got the win on the mound and Sue Steele and Katy Haynes each doubled.
Leavitt’s Tori Zupancic had two hits.
Poland 6, Sacopee Valley 1
SOUTH HIRAM — Amanda Gibson cleared the bases in a six-run, seventh inning to help push Poland to a 6-1 triumph over Sacopee Valley in softball action Saturday.
The Hawks (5-7) scored a run in the bottom of the third and the score remained 1-0 through the top of the final frame.
The Knights (7-5) had trouble plating a run during the first six innings. But, Gilbson roped a triple to push three runs across in the six-run seventh.
Sacopee pitcher Ashley Pingree struck out eight and took the hard luck loss, while Poland pitcher Kolby Woods improved her record to 4-2 with six strike outs in seven innings of work.
College baseball
Maine swept
ORONO — The University of Maine dropped a doubleheader to Stony Brook, 7-2 and 10-9, in baseball action Saturday afternoon.
The Black Bears (26-26) scored twice in the bottom of the first when Michael Fransoso doubled and scored on Tyler Patzalek’s ground out, and Scott Heath singled and scored on an Alex Calbick double that went to the center field fence.
Stony Brook finished off Maine in the seventh inning of the opener by adding three runs to their margin.
In the nightcap, Stony Brook got a decisive run in the top of the first inning.
The Black Bears extended their lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Troy Black doubled in a pair of runs.
The Seawolves (43-11) responded with five runs in the top of the eighth inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded, two-run double from Cole Peragine and a two-run home run by Kevin Courtney.
Though Calbrick belted a home run in the bottom of the frame for the
Black Bears to take a 9-6 lead, Stony Brook came right back with four runs in the top of the ninth, keyed by a two-run single from Peragine and a two-run double by Maxx Tissenbaum.
