Looking ahead at the contemplated and seemingly all but decided monetary invasions of the state’s decidedly insignificant citizens, could someone please enlighten this citizen as to the role of the Fund for a Healthy Maine?

As I recall, government earmarked these funds, provided by tobacco company settlements, for assistance to those people in need regarding their health and well-being. That is money the state receives. The state need not tax to get it and it is distributed to those in need through many programs established at the onset.

The taking or reducing of that earmarked money is tantamount to robbing the piggy bank. I just don’t understand how this affects the state’s budget, given that it is self-sustaining.

The current budget attack is blatantly crippling and dismantling decisions made regarding the use of those funds.

Also, it is mind-boggling to me that this is the third time this year the fund has come under attack by Gov. Paul LePage. The governor has twice been told “no” regarding this approach, and has defiantly opened the door again. This time, no one seems to be saying no.

When does “no” mean “no” to LePage, or is it “no” only when he says it?

I am angry but certain that I am not alone and, hopefully, with other angry citizens, we will be sending LePage and his crew a clear message in the next election.
