JAY – Two local men are each being held on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 surety at Oxford County Jail in South Paris in connection to the May 20 robbery of the Big Apple Store on Route 140 in Canton.

Edward Barbioni Jr., 29, and Alexander Ryerson, 19, both of Jay, were each arrested Saturday morning on a felony charge of robbery, Jay police Detective Richard Caton IV said.

The men are not expected to appear in court until Tuesday, a corrections officer at the Oxford County Jail said Saturday.

Both men have criminal histories, according to Sun Journal archives.

Caton said Jay police, Oxford County Sheriff deputies and the Maine State Police Tactical Team surrounded a three-story apartment building at 77 Knapp Street in Jay at about 4 a.m.

They executed a search warrant of the first floor apartment, Caton said.

“We ended up arresting two people on robbery charges in reference to the Canton Big Apple robbery that occurred (last) Sunday night at 11:15 p.m.,” he said. “Two people walked into the store and displayed a hand gun to two clerks.”

The suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and a carton of cigarettes, he said.

Oxford County deputies have been working on the robbery and Jay has been working on a truck that was stolen from a Knapp Street residence that was reported Sunday night. It was recovered on Monday morning a couple of streets away on Marcello Street.

There have also been several motor vehicle burglaries this past week in the Chisholm Village area where both streets in Jay are located.

The two law enforcement entities began working together and developed information to get a search warrant, according to Caton.

Oxford County Sheriff Lt. Christopher Wainwright and fellow deputies and Jay police Chief Larry White Sr., officer Nicholas Gulliver and Caton and members of the state tactical team were involved in executing the warrant, Caton said.

More charges are expected to be forthcoming, he said.
