LEWISTON — Two drivers were injured when their vehicles collided at East Avenue and Bartlett Street on Wednesday afternoon.

Witnesses said a Volkswagen Beetle and an SUV collided, sending the SUV spinning over the edge of an embankment but not before wiping out the utility pole and a guardrail.

It happened fast, witnesses said. And loud.

“We heard this screech and then a big bang,” said Marianne Ouellette, a teenager who was standing with a group of others on a East Avenue sidewalk. “The lights just came crashing down.”

The SUV came to rest halfway down the embankment, part of it snagged in the twisted guardrail. Inside, Holly Harvey, 18, of Richmond, was injured.

The Volkswagen was driven by Darcy Reed, 19, of Lewiston, who suffered cuts and back pain. She was treated at a hospital and later released.

A pole was snapped in half and traffic lights dangled over the intersection. One crashed down onto Reed’s car. Another hung just 2 feet from the street, the lights continuing to turn green, amber and red at regular intervals.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
