Three local champions and boys’ team co-champions highlighted the Class B track and field championship Saturday at Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor.

Falmouth and York finished in a tie for the boys’ title, only nine points ahead of Waterville. It is the Yachtsmen’s third championship in the past four seasons and the Wildcats’ first since 1987.

Waterville maintained its grip on the girls’ crown. The Purple Panthers took a victory lap for the sixth straight spring after a 60-point win over Greely.

Ethan Hutchins of Spruce Mountain, Will Shafer of Gray-New Gloucester and Hope Kohtala of Poland won individual titles.

Hutchins became the first track champion for the consolidated Livermore Falls and Jay schools. He won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.44, gaining the nod in a virtual dead heat with Reid Pryzant of Falmouth.

Shafer dominated the 1,600 meters. His mile time of 4:25.74 was seven seconds in front of Falmouth’s Timothy Follo.

Kohtala was the first girl to high jump five feet, two inches, taking the top spot over Tia Jackson of Old Town and Emily Saunders of Greely.

Her Poland teammate, Emma-Jane Turton, may have been the region’s individual star on the day.

Turton was second in 300 hurdles, third in the 200 and fourth in the 100.

Those 18 points pushed Poland to sixth overall with 32.

Bethanie Brown of Waterville set Class B girls’ records in the 1,600 and 3,200. Brown also shared in the 4×400 relay title.

Lake Region freshman Kate Hall was the 100 and 200 champion, including a state record of 12.33 seconds in the 100.

Shafer led Gray-NG (44) to fifth place in the boys’ sweepstakes. He was runner-up in the 800 and paced the 4×400 relay to third.

Ian Marshall (race walk) and Elijah Locke (high jump) added third-place finishes for the Patriots. Leavitt’s Jordan Hersom dashed to third in the 400.
