BETHEL — Selectmen will seek professional help to tinker with the Sign Ordinance.
The decision was made at Monday night’s board meeting to add an article to the town meeting warrant asking residents to appropriate money to hire a sign consultant, Town Manager Jim Doar said.
The consultant would help mediate a committee to “make some changes to the Sign Ordinance,” Doar said.
Town Clerk Christen Mason said Wednesday that the new article replaces one that asked, “Shall the town vote to repeal the Sign Ordinance, Chapter 136 of the town code?”
At a public hearing on May 30 about possibly abolishing the Sign Ordinance, several business owners aired gripes about the law.
Many said they believe it’s overly restrictive to the point of reducing sales and their ability to attract customers with signage.
Selectmen agreed that the ordinance needs work and that the ideas of business owners should be considered when drafting changes.
The annual town meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at Crescent Park School.
