FARMINGTON — The Gold LEAF Institute Senior College will kick off the summer term of classes on Wednesday, June 27, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the University of Maine at Farmington Olsen Student Center, North Dining Hall, 111 South St. The annual business meeting will be held at the beginning, followed by course registrations. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Anyone age 50 or older who is interested in lifelong learning opportunities and socializing with people who have similar interests is welcome to attend. There are no educational prerequisites to be a part of Gold LEAF.
The summer term will offer a wide variety of interesting classes and field trips, all of which are designed to make learning fun and stress free. Single-session classes will cover such topics as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, New England’s contribution to the English language, Navajo and Hopi cultures, and how to combine fruits and vegetables to make healthy drinks.
Multi-session classes vary from Spirit Journeying, meditation, freestyle drumming and singing, to a history of chemistry between the two world wars, the upcoming elections and discussion of three Maine books. Drew Barton, professor of biology at UMF, will present a class featuring a book he co-authored, “The Changing Nature of the Maine Woods.” The book will be published this summer.
Opportunities for groups to travel together include a tour of interesting places in Turner, a Celtic concert in Phillips, food bank tours, a visit to Khadighar Farm, Younity Winery and Vineyard tour, a pontoon boat ride in Belgrade Lakes, the North Country Pow Wow, a hike in “Nina’s Woods” and a musical at the Theater at Monmouth.
The full list of course offerings is on the website at goldleaf.wikispaces.com. Some classes fill up early, so everyone is encouraged to register for classes as soon as possible.
Annual membership dues are $30 for the year beginning July 1. A special summer-only membership, which runs from July 1 through Oct. 15, is available for $15 to accommodate those who reside in Maine for only a part of the year. Each class also has a nominal fee.
