SHELBURNE, N.H. — Warren (Tommy) and Nina Hayes of Shelburne, N.H., were given an early surprise 65th anniversary party by their children, Marlene Hayes and her husband, David Stevens, of Greenland, N.H., Melanie Devoid of Lebanon, N.H., and Marcia Kulpa and her husband, Arthur (Butch) Kulpa, of Vassalboro, at the Mahoosuc Inn in Milan on Saturday afternoon May 26.

Toasting/roasting and tributes were given by Marlene Hayes, Melanie Devoid, Marcia Kulpa, David Stevens, Butch Kulpa, grandchildren, Stan Warren, Krystle Frank, Ryan Hayes and Terri Stevens, brother-in-law, Burton Meyers and neighbor and Shelburne’s assistant fire chief, Billy Davenport.

In attendance were many from the couple’s original bridal party, Alice Keddy of Gorham, sister of Mrs. Hayes and maid of honor, Dorothy Bean of Bethel, sister of Mr. Hayes, bridesmaid, and Anne Schaffer of Standish, friend of the family, flower girl.

The couple was married in Bethel on Dec. 21, 1947, at the Bethel Methodist Church by the Rev. William Penner.

Most of their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters and their spouses and a number of friends and firefighters from the Shelburne community were in attendance.

In the words of dear friend and former Shelburne resident, Olma Sullivan, “Marriage surely suits you both. Enjoy and celebrate. Long may you reign.”

Throughout the event a video prepared by Marcia was played representing pictures from their courtship, wedding and 65 years of marriage.
