DIXFIELD — Two newly elected selectmen were welcomed to their first meeting Monday night.

Scott Belskis, a small business owner, and Hart Daley, a captain with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, were the top two vote-getters in last week’s election.

Former Selectman Norine Clarke and first-time office seeker Janice Merrill were defeated, and former Selectman Stephen Donahue chose not to seek another three-year term.

Town Manager Eugene Skibitsky provided Belskis and Daley with information on workshops for new board members and explained that all funds paid by the town must be approved by the board.

Malcolm Gill was elected board chairman after Selectman Katherine Harvey declined the nomination. Gill replaces Donahue. Harvey was nominated for, and accepted, the position of vice chairman of the board.

In other matters, the board received a report from public works foreman David Phair that a new product used by some Maine towns on winter ice may save the town a significant amount of money. The product, magnesium sulfate, would replace the use of salt and calcium. Although it costs a bit more than salt, the sulfate should cover more road surface.

Phair will continue to research the issue.

He also said that during the past year, the town saved between $12,000 and $14,000 in heating fuel costs at the town garage, because the furnace can use waste oil. He said 2,875 gallons of waste oil used came at no cost to the town.

Also on Monday, the board:

* Voted to remove tractor-trailer truck restrictions on the Common Road.

* Agreed to sell about 600 yards of asphalt/gravel mix for use toward the costs of finishing work on the Porter Road.
