As soon as he was in his seat, he noticed that his coat and vest were both unbuttoned and his check and money were gone. C.E. The Lewiston Fire Department has a new device to teach youngsters, and even new firemen, how a fire alarm system works. Designed and built by Pvt. Raymond J. Jacqmin with the assistance of Joseph Therriault, the unit gives a visual demonstration of what happens when an alarm is rung in or is sent in by a sprinkler or automatic alarm system. The device is housed in a fold-up suitcase and is decoratively painted resembling a fire station.

A portion of the roof of 208 Main St., Auburn, collapsed Friday night, igniting fears someone was inside and forcing the temporary evacuation of about a dozen people in neighboring buildings. An hour after the 9 p.m. collapse, police determined there was no one in the building, which had been gutted by fire in January. A neighbor said there have been people going into the building all the time, looking for salvageable items among the debris. He said the construction company doing the rebuilding has repeatedly boarded up entrances, but people keep removing the boards.
