I am writing in response to Jeanne Raymond’s letter, printed June 20, regarding the “inception” of the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council.

Although I appreciate her words of praise regarding my longtime involvement with LYAC, I wanted to set the record straight that I was not responsible for the inception of that group.

The idea for a city of Lewiston youth council was that of former Mayor Kaileigh A. Tara. She had requested that research be done in regard to other youth councils throughout the country.

Director of Recreation Maggie Chisholm and I proceeded to review other youth councils and, following input by community adults and youths, presentations to the City Council, a community forum about the idea of a youth council, input by city youth interns, and engagement with the Boston and Portland youth councils, the then-sitting Lewiston City Council established the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council by an Oct. 16, 2001, vote.

Eventually, Chisholm and I were given the task of being co-advisers for the group.

I agree with Raymond that LYAC has made outstanding contributions to this community, and it is very gratifying to see former members achieve success. Working with LYAC members is a tremendous joy, and I am continually amazed by their positive civic engagement.

I am also very grateful for Raymond’s continual support of LYAC, as members always have a smile whenever they see her or receive a card of encouragement from her; she clearly is a cheerleader of youth.
