RUMFORD — The grounds around Mountain Valley High School have recently sprouted strange yellow objects with baskets and chains. To the uninitiated, the contraption is a disk golf “hole,” known as the target.

Disk golf is an individual activity that combines golf and a Frisbee-like disk. The player stands at a marked location and throws the disk toward the hole. Like in golf, the number of throws is counted to determine the winner and course records.

The Mountain Valley course has nine holes. The tee box for hole number one is behind the gymnasium at the Danny Garneau Memorial sign.

“At this point, it’s a par three course with several par two holes,” said Todd Papianou, physical education teacher.

The course will be open to members of the public all day every day. Physical education classes have first priority during school time but usually take less than an hour to complete the course. The public is invited to use the course during the summer.

“If you don’t have a disk, you can borrow one from the school when the office is open,” Papianou said.

Papianou said, “A kiosk at hole one will give an explanation of the rules. You can also pick up a map of the course and score cards.”

According to Papianou, a Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant paid for all the equipment. “Originally, one set of the targets was to go to St. Athanasius St. John Elementary School,” he said, “but they don’t have an appropriate space so we are using that set. Another set was purchased for Black Mountain, one for Rumford Rec and one to be shared by Meroby and the middle school.”
