LEWISTON — College for ME-Androscoggin (C4ME-A) has created a first-in-the-nation web-based degree monument that celebrates the college degrees earned by people who live or work in Androscoggin County. More than 500 people have already registered their names and degrees. The group is now aiming for 1,000 names.

Toward that end, C4ME-A is holding a degree drive to get even more people registered so that their accomplishment can be celebrated across the 500-square mile region. During the drive, people can visit the C4ME-A website at www.collegeformeandroscoggin.org/degree-monument/register. At the end of the June, all the names listed on the monument will be placed in a drawing for a Kindle Fire.

Plans are currently underway to scroll the names on the Degree Monument at area festivals where they can be celebrated by all, as was done at the second annual Lewiston-Auburn Film Festival when the Degree Monument was scrolled before feature-length films.

According to Joan Macri, associate director of C4ME-A, “It is so important that we celebrate the hard work, sacrifices and determination of all those who have worked hard to earn college degrees. Their accomplishments make a real difference in our community’s educational and economic well-being, and they model for generations to follow the importance of education as we move forward in the 21st century.”
