100 years ago, 1912
Like a great American eagle out for a morning spin, seeking its breakfast, Harry Atwood, world-famous aviator, brought his white-winged Curtis-Wright bi-plane, by a series of graceful curves, to a smooth, easy landing on the green lawn in front of the Poland Spring House at 7:25 Saturday morning. It was the first aeroplane to visit Poland Spring. Atwood’s landing marked the first trans-state flight of a heavier-than-air machine ever made in Maine. This stage of his flight from Pittsfield took two hours.
50 years ago, 1962
Ever been to jail without having done anything wrong and not even been sentenced by a judge? That’s what happened to a number of Lewiston-Auburn citizens today. It was the Jaycees Jailbird Jamboree at the Lewiston City Park and jail sentences were going like hotcakes. “Who did this to me?” was the most common expression heard by the several dozen people who were committed to the outdoor jail. Sentences varied from the minimum of five minutes. For a fee of $1 paid by the person who ordered the “jailing” up to 30 minutes, which cost $5.
25 years ago, 1987
Practically all Lewiston-Auburn shoe and mill workers have the week of July 4th to look forward to as a vacation period. Except for employees of the Clark Shoe Company, who will work Monday and Tuesday but shut down for the remainder of the week, all shoe workers and employees of Bates, Libbey and Pepperell mills will not be working. Raytheon’s Lewiston plant will also be closed for the 4th.
