RANGELEY — An Oquossoc man faces a drunken driving charge after he was stopped Tuesday and failed a field sobriety test, police say.
Kevin Bliss, 56, was charged with drunken driving for operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content more than three times the legal limit.
Rangeley police officer Jared Austin said he responded to a complaint of an intoxicated man with a small child in his vehicle at about 7 p.m. Tuesday at Oquossoc Grocery Store. When he arrived, they were gone.
Austin said he located Bliss about a quarter-mile away as he was backing out of his driveway and nearly hit the cruiser. The 8-year-old child was not in the vehicle, he said.
“I did a field sobriety test and he failed and was arrested on an operating under the influence charge,” Austin said. “He was over three times the legal limit.”
The legal limit for blood alcohol content while driving in Maine is 0.08 percent.
Bliss is scheduled to appear Aug. 23 in a Farmington court.
In a separate incident, Austin said he tried to stop a speeding motorcyclist on Route 4 on Wednesday, but the driver sped off. He later found the driver, Gary Cook, 24, of Oquossoc and charged him with failing to stop for a police officer. He also issued traffic violations for failure to wear protective head gear and a speeding ticket. Cook who was operating on a learner’s permit, which requires a helmet be worn for the first year, Austin said.
