The Maine Turnpike Authority’s proposed toll increases place a disproportionate burden on Lewiston residents. The proposed increases would mean that commuters traveling from Lewiston to Portland will pay 10.3 cents per mile, while a similar length trip from Wells to Portland would cost only 4.6 cents per mile.

Bob Stone, MTA board member and Lewiston resident, recently said, “I believe Lewiston-Auburn folks will be happy with the (new toll) structure.”

Make no mistake, I am not opposed to our residents pitching in our fair share, but the burden of future turnpike expenses is being placed on our residents disproportionately.

I, for one, am not happy with the new structure. I hope Stone hears from other residents on this issue.

Nate Libby, Lewiston, City Councilor, Ward 3
