LIVERMORE — A Strawberry Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center.  This year’s theme, “Exploring Norlands History,” is a collaboration of numerous programs offered to inspire visitors to learn about 19th-century rural Maine life and Livermore’s celebrated Washburn family through hands-on experiences.

All of the historic buildings will be open for tours and special living programs will be conducted by Norlands staff and volunteers in period dress. Visitors to the Norlands experience the smells, sounds and sights of living in 1870. The buildings, the landscape and the activities all serve to provide an enchanted experience, a step back in time. Ongoing activities for the day include the one-room schoolhouse, mansion tours, informative talks about Livermore’s Washburn family, demonstrations and artifact games in the farmer’s cottage, old-fashioned games on the front lawn, storytelling in the Meeting House, quilting demonstrations and hayrides.

Strawberry pancakes, $3, will be served beginning at 9:30 a.m., before general programming begins at 10 a.m. Strawberry shortcake will be available by 10 a.m. At 2:30 p.m., visitors may help to make strawberry ice cream, the old-fashioned way, using a hand-crank machine.

Special programs take place throughout the day. Jerry Ellis, long-time Livermore resident and area musician, will perform an organ concert in the Meeting House at 1:30 p.m. Guided nature walks to the Pools of Simeon will be offered at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Living history presentations by Norlands staff include “The Busy Cradle” and “Meet Mercy Lovejoy.”

Jude Lamb, storyteller, will present “Women were Pioneers, Too.” Kerck Kelsey will speak on Israel Washburn Jr. and the Civil War. Visitors will have the opportunity to become a scholar in the one-room schoolhouse with an in-depth program at noontime. At 1 p.m., visitors may take a guided tour of the 1867 mansion with a “Washburn.” Those age 10 and older may visit with the Pray family in the Washburn family kitchen at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful grounds. General admission for the day is $8 for adults and $6 for children age 12 and under. Extra charges apply for strawberry pancakes and strawberry shortcake. Visit www.norlands.org for updates to the program calendar.
