AUBURN — The School Committee has voted to give Superintendent Katy Grondin a $5,000 raise.
Grondin’s salary will be $115,000 a year, said Chairman Tom Kendall said. The committee discussed her performance June 20 in executive session, then voted to give her the raise.
Grondin’s salary covers year two of her three-year contract. The committee will vote whether to change her salary one year from now.
The committee voted 4-1 to approve the raise, Kendall said. Those voting for were William Horton, Francois Bussiere, Laurie Tannebaum and Larry Pelletier, with Tracy Levesque voting against. As the chairman, Kendall only votes if there’s a tie. He said Monday he supports the raise.
He praised Grondin for not only being competent but for bringing about change and progress in Auburn schools. “It has been extraordinary, it’s unprecedented in the education environment,” Kendall said. “We have achieved change that has not happened in the last 150 years. The direction has been set, and the whole committee recognized that. She deserves the recognition.”
Auburn schools are embracing “mass customized learning” in grades K-12. Mass customized learning, Kendall said, is addressing students’ needs where they are by providing individualized learning, using more technology and new teaching methods where the student “owns” his or her learning. Teachers still teach, but become facilitators.
Grondin became superintendent one year ago when Superintendent Tom Morrill retired. Before that she was assistant superintendent, and before that principal of Sherwood Heights Elementary School.
According to a Maine Department of Education list of school superintendent annual salaries for 2012, the pay varies. A few examples are Lewiston, $116,500; Augusta, $101,672; Sabattus area, $104,000; South Portland, $115,360; Portland, $141,500; Brunswick, $122,400; Bangor, $144,116; Lisbon, $86,500; and Farmington area, $100,007.
