JAY-LIVERMORE FALLS — A fundraising effort is under way to raise money to help the family of wounded soldier Sgt. Helaina Lake travel to Maryland to be by her side.

Lake, formerly of Livermore Falls, was seriously injured last week in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan. The 23-year-old was moved to Walter Reed National Military Center in Bethesda, Md., on Monday.

She is the daughter of Bernal and Jeannine Lake of Livermore Falls, who are caring for her 2-year-old son, Aden.

Police departments in Jay and Livermore Falls have approved roadblocks on Thursday, June 27, and Friday, June 28, to collect funds.

There will be a meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the American Legion on Reynolds Avenue in Livermore Falls to sign up to help and go over plans.
Depending on how many step forward, it will be decided whether roadblocks will be at one or two locations and how long a shift will be, Legion Adjutant Don Simoneau of Fayette said.

“We will need volunteers with pickup trucks to set up and tear down the roadblock each day,” Simoneau said.

The hope is to get enough volunteers to man two road stops each day from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The proceeds will go to the Wounded Helaina Fund.
