PARIS — Selectmen are considering making the road committee permanent.
The committee, which was formed last year to help plan for road improvements over the coming years, is set to disband June 30. With plenty of road work ahead for the town, the board could make the committee permanent.
Selectman Ryan Lorrain, who said he initially voted against the committee, said it was productive, and he now supports making it permanent. The committee endorsed a 10-year plan written by Town Manager Phil Tarr and Highway Foreman Dan Nowell.
The board will create a charge for the committee for the next meeting before making a final vote in whether to keep it.
Also discussed at Monday’s meeting:
* The town will enter a six-month deal with Paris Cape Realty to sell the Pine Street Fire Station. At the May 14 meeting, selectmen rejected a $15,000 offer for the property.
The station hasn’t been used since the town built one on Western Avenue years ago. Selectmen were told the building would cost $27,000 to demolish, not counting hazardous waste removal. Tarr said the estimated cost of waste disposal would be about $105,000.
* The town will get $1,460 confiscated from a convicted drug dealer. Zane Loper, a Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agent and former member of the Paris Police Department, was part of the investigation that led to the arrest. Paris is entitled to a percentage of the money confiscated. The money will go into the General Fund.
* Newly-elected Selectman Sam Elliot is the board’s chairman. After two tie votes between Elliot and Kirchherr, the board drew lots and Elliot’s name was drawn. Kirchherr was unanimously voted vice chairman.
* Selectmen accepted a bid of $157,145 for a new sidewalk tractor. The cost includes trading in the old one. Voters approved spending up to $175,000 on the tractor.
