RAYMOND – One man was hospitalized and two others were under arrest after what police described as a dispute over a debt.

The victim of the Monday night attack, a 51-year-old Raymond man, was run over by a GMC Suburban during the clash and remained hospitalized on Wednesday.

Richard D. Valliere, 35, of Windham was arrested after the confrontation and faces a felony charge of reckless conduct with a motor vehicle. He was being held at the Cumberland County Jail on $1,000 cash bail.

Hubert A. Libby Jr., 51, of Gorham, was charged with misdemeanor assault and was being held at the jail on $500 bail.

Both men appeared Wednesday in a Portland court.

The assault occurred at the 75 Mill St. garage owned by the victim, police said.

Police said Valliere and Libby went to the garage about 10 p.m. Monday to confront the garage owner over a debt that was owed to them. At one point, Libby punched the garage owner, according to police.

Another garage worker, believing Libby and Valliere were carrying guns, armed himself with a splitting maul, police said.

At that point, Valliere got into the Suburban and ran over the garage owner, police said. The 51-year-old suffered a broken leg and chest injuries.

The two suspects fled in the Suburban before they were pulled over by Windham police and arrested.

The case remained under investigation Wednesday night.
