L.L. Bean book author to give presentation
BETHEL — On Saturday, July 7, at 1:30 p.m., James Witherell, author of “L.L. Bean — The Man and His Company: The Complete Story,” will give a presentation and sign copies of his book at the Bethel Historical Society.
Because his feet got wet and sore on a hunting trip, L. L. Bean developed his famous boot and started the mail-order company that would change the sleepy town of Freeport into a huge outdoor mall. The story begins with the Bean family (who lived for a time in Bethel), young Leon Leonwood Bean’s love of the outdoors, his first forays into sales (butter, men’s clothing) and then his development of “the boot” and the beginnings of an outdoors outfitting company that ran on a card file system and resisted change. The story of L.L. Bean, Inc.’s phenomenal growth under grandson Leon Gorman is replete with preppies, MBAs, infighting and even parodies of a company that would eventually get its own zip code.
Witherell is a master Maine Guide and the creator of hiking maps for Acadia National Park and Baxter State Park. Also an avid cyclist, he is the author of “Bicycle History” (McGann) and working on a book about the Tour de France. This program celebrates the 100th anniversary of the L. L. Bean company; the author will be available afterwards to sign copies of his 576-page book. The program is free and will take place in the Mason House exhibit hall at 14 Broad St.
Historical Society plans Sam O. White Day
STRATTON — The Dead River Area Historical Society will hold the annual Sam O. White Day, on Sunday, July 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The even will be hosted by Sam’s distant cousin Emerson Dyer.
Sam was born and raised on Eustis Ridge. After his duty in the First World War, he moved to Alaska. He was the first bush pilot/Game Warden in the world. The book, “Sam O. White, Alaskan” is now available at Country Charm in Stratton. For more information call 246-5871.
Sam did a good job of documenting his life and sending pictures, news paper clippings and other documents back to the people he loved. We are most appreciative that his family has chosen to share their memorabilia with the public and to house it in the Dear River Area Historical Society.
The historical society’s special days are not presentations but a gathering of people knowledgeable about the featured subject.
The Dead River Area Historical Society is open every weekend throughout July and August from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Displays include a collection of old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads.
For more information call Emerson Dyer at 246-7472
