BUCKFIELD — Selectmen voted Tuesday night to form a Community Day Committee that will organize activities and volunteers for an annual Labor Day celebration.
They appointed Ben and Karen Lovejoy and Jason Rowe for two-year terms and Ralph Hart for one year.
Town Manager Dana Lee said he and the office would assist in any way needed. He said more people are sought for the committee.
Labor Day celebrations have been big events in the past, with a parade, crafts and other activities, and Selectman Robin Buswell asked that they be continued.
In other business, the board appointed Cynthia Dunn as town clerk, tax collector, excise tax collector, bookkeeper, payroll clerk, A/P clerk, registrar of voters, assessor, motor vehicle registration agent and watercraft/ATV/snowmobile registration agent.
Robert Larrabee was appointed animal control officer, Thomas Verrill as sealer of weights and measures and Thomas Standard as civil emergency preparedness administrator.
In other news, the board awarded the contract for a zero-turn commercial mower to Frechette’s Sales & Service in Buckfield for $5,600.
Lee welcomed new Selectman Martha Catevenis to the board.
Buswell was elected chairman and Rodney Allen vice chairman for the year.
Lee gave the board the road improvement budget, which includes paving High Street as far as the old Sumner Road and Bear Pond Road. More work is planned for next year on High Street and Purkis Road.
Lee said they will have $24,251 left, and the board voted to apply this to road sealing.
Jerry Wiley of the Road Committee said next year Purkis Road would be the priority. Voters cut the road work budget by $174,200 last month, so some work can’t be done.
Wiley said it is town policy to place connector roads at the top of a paving program.
Lee said they are going ahead with paving the Transfer Station because this is a separate account and can’t be used to do town roads.
The board reviewed a town manager appraisal form and will discuss it at the July 17 meeting. Goals will be included.
Also that night there will be a hearing at 6 p.m. on closing Sodom and Mountain roads for winter maintenance.
The board approved changes in the Recreation Committee bylaws. One allows Sumner and Hartford residents to serve on the committee and the other removes adult basketball and softball and Labor Day from the subcommittees.
