RUMFORD — The Rumford Public Library summer fest program, “Dream Big, Read!” invites area children to bug out to the library for an hour of tarantulas, scorpions, giant African millipedes, Madagascan hissing cockroaches and other surprises. Jim Nutting of the Butterfly and Insect Museum in Lisbon Falls will be the special guest at the library on Wednesday, July 11.
Nutting is a bug enthusiast with a personal collection of thousands of live and mounted insects and has an extensive knowledge of the specimens. He lives in Auburn and is co-owner of Maine Art Glass Studio in Lisbon Falls.
In coming weeks guests will include Rob “Snake Man” White, Bitsy “Science Guy” Ionta, Lori Grassette and the Spoon Band and the final program will feature Scott Grassette, a magical man.
There is still time to participate in the Dream Big, Read! Summer Reading program. Children interested may get further information about the program and the reading incentives by picking up a reading packet in the Children’s Room. Gift certificates for a Portland Sea Dogs game, Pizza Hut, The Big Adventure Center, Sam’s Italian Food, Frosty Delight and Amato’s have been generously donated by area merchants. New this year, participants who write a short book blurb can pick a prize from the mystery treasure chest.
All programs are free of charge and open to all area children and their friends. Parents and other care givers are welcome to attend and are encouraged to accompany younger children.
All programs will be held in the library’s public room at 2 p.m.
