LEWISTON — Twin City Spinners, Maine’s newest square dance club, celebrated its first graduation class on June 21. Fourteen students were honored for completing the mainstream dance program. They now have the skills to dance anywhere in the world, as the mainstream program is used by dance clubs in all 50 states, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China, South Korea and Japan.
This graduation also celebrates a new summer home for Twin City Spinners at the Lewiston YWCA on East Avenue. TCS will be dancing Thursday evenings at the YWCA and will be sponsoring free community dancing from 6-6:45 p.m. every Thursday. No prior experience is necessary; everything will be taught. Adults and children are welcome to attend any or all the community dances.
TCS is a modern square dance club, open to dancers of all ages (adult member must attend with minor children) and dancing to a variety of music including jazz, Latin, country, rock, disco, modern dance as well as more traditional country and bluegrass. Introductory classes are formed twice a year, usually in October and February. Visit twincityspinners.squaredanceme.us for more information.
The club is lead by caller/instructor Al Hipkins (www.sdcaller.us) who has been dancing since 1972 and calling and teaching since 2007. Hipkins calls throughout New England and has called as far west as Nashville, Tenn. In addition to teaching and calling square dance, Hipkins also teaches line dancing, two-step and waltz.
