Benefit supper for Cherie Sargent

BUCKFIELD — The Buckfield Literary Club is sponsoring a benefit supper for Cherie Sargent at the Masonic Hall in Buckfield on Saturday, July 7. The supper will help with expenses involved with chemo treatments for Cherie at Dana Farber in Boston.

Poland museum open for summer

POLAND — Poland Historical Society Museum is now open for the summer season, Thursday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. Anyone wishing to view or purchase any of the pictures of classes or one-room school houses are welcome to stop by any Thursday afternoon. For more information call 998-4391.

American Legion to meet July 11

Mars Magic Indoor Planetarium

AUBURN —  John Meader of Maine’s Northern Stars Planetarium will bring his indoor planetarium to the Auburn Public Library at 6 p.m. Monday, July 16, for Mars Magic.

Examine the red planet and see what we’ve discovered about Martian germs, rust, rocks, faces, canals, rivers, canyons and volcanoes. Meet the space probes that have visited this planet: Spirit, Opportunity, Viking, Pathfinder, Sojourner, Mars Global Surveyor and learn about the upcoming Curiosity Rover.

This program is for teens and adults. Space is limited. Call the reference department to register at 333-6640, ext. 4.

Historical Society program

AUBURN — On Tuesday, July 17, at 2 p.m. at the Auburn Public Library, a panel of four Androscoggin Historical Society members will help Lewiston and Auburn residents celebrate America’s birthday.

Douglas I. Hodgkin will talk about the creation of local Civil War monuments. He will share the history behind the monument in Lewiston by Franklin Simmons (1839-1913), a Bates graduate who was born in Sabattus, and the one in Auburn by Martin Millmore (1844-1883).

Russ Burbank will share insight about Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909), an almost-forgotten Civil War general and career U.S. Army officer born in Leeds. Howard is known in history as the “Christian General.”

In addition, David C. Garcelon will read Civil War letters written by his great-grandfather, Charles A. Garcelon (1842-1935), 16th Maine Regiment, son of Gov. Alonzo Garcelon. Finally, Annette Vance Dorey will show some websites where family historians can search for military records.

The program is free and will take place in the Androscoggin Community Room.
