Region 9 summer school schedule

RUMFORD — Region 9 Adult Education has announced their summer school schedule.

Classes will be held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon starting Tuesday, July 10, and running until Aug. 16.

Anyone interested in obtaining their GED or high school diploma is welcome to enroll. We can also help with improving skills for those seeking to enroll in college.

Maine Military Event canceled

PARIS — Western Maine Veterans Advisory Committee has announced that the Maine Military Event, scheduled for Aug. 18, has been canceled due to scheduling conflicts.

Benefit photo-thon for 9 year old

MINOT — T-He Photography and EO Photography will host a benefit photo-thon from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, July 14 and 15, at Hemond’s MX, 695 Woodman Hill Road, Route 119.

All proceeds will benefit Caleb Morris, 9, of Minot who has been racing motocross for the past five years. Morris was recently diagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer of connective tissue.

Each benefit outdoor photo session will last 30 minutes and photos will be provided on CD. Cost is $50 per session. If all sessions are booked, organizers hope to raise $2,000 to help the Morris family.

‘Fixing the Future’ screening

NORWAY/PORTLAND — Hour Exchange Portland, Local Sprouts Cooperative and Portland Permaculture will join dozens of other community organizations across the country as part of a one-night-only event to jumpstart local, sustainable economies as hosts of a feature screening of the documentary “Fixing the Future,” followed by an exclusive onscreen discussion panel, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Nickelodeon, 1 Temple St.

“Fixing the Future” will also be screened in Norway by Transition Oxford Hills, in Belfast by the Belfast Co-op, in Blue Hill by the Blue Hill Co-Op and in Waterville by Railroad Square Cinemas. More information can be found at www.FixingTheFuture.org.

The panel will include Bill McKibben, author and environmentalist; Majora Carter, broadcaster and urban revitalization strategist; Mike Brady, CEO of Greyston Bakery and social entrepreneur; and David Brancaccio, host of NOW on PBS.

“Fixing the Future” features Hour Exchange Portland along with other local solutions to fixing the economy including local banking, buy local campaigns, local currency, worker owned cooperatives and more. CMCC info program July 19

AUBURNCentral Maine Community College will host an informational program from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, designed for students interested in attending the college this fall.

This informal open house will include information on admissions, financial aid, academic programs and campus tours. All students applying will have the $20 application fee waived. Assistance will be provided in completing the admissions application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

The open house welcomes potential students of all ages, including the “nontraditional” student population. Nontraditional students are generally older students attending college for the first time or returning to college after an extended absence.

FCHN CIO named to ConnectMe

FARMINGTON — Gov. Paul Lepage has appointed Ralph Johnson, chief information officer at Franklin Community Health Network, to serve as a board member of ConnectMe Authority. The goal of the authority is to facilitate universal availability of broadband service and to increase the “take rate,” which is critical to Maine’s education and economic prosperity.

During Johnson’s tenure at Franklin Community Health Network that started in 2006, information technology has been a priority. In July 2011, Franklin Memorial Hospital was named among the nation’s “most wired” hospitals according to the results of the 2011 Most Wired Survey Benchmarking Study released in the American Hospital Association’s journal Hospitals & Health Networks.

Teddy Bear Scramble seeks golfers

GRAY — The 7th annual Teddy Bear Scramble for the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland will take place Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Spring Meadows Golf Club at Cole Farms, Route 100.

Sign up will be from 7 to 8 a.m., with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start, followed by a luncheon and awards. Cost is $70 per person, which includes green fees, cart, barbecue lunch and beverage.

Checks should be made payable to Children’s Dyslexia Center – Portland and mailed to Valley of Portland Masonic Temple, 415 Congress St., Portland ME 04101-3500. All fees must be paid by Aug. 10.
