On July 2, I read the amazing news that more Mainers are speeding but law enforcement officials are writing fewer tickets. Who knew?

One of the reasons cited is that many Mainers cannot afford to pay those tickets.

Why can’t people start off a little earlier to get where they’re going?

I also read recently that fewer people are wearing seat belts and there is more distracted driving. If people aren’t going to pay attention to the speed limit, there is a good possibility they’re going to pay little attention to any other traffic laws.

I have been told by Auburn police the reason they don’t write speeding tickets is “they have more important things to do” or “money from the tickets goes to Augusta.”

Recently, I have had several close calls with people running stop signs, texting, talking on the phone and, oh, and crossing over the double yellow line. I don’t think they care if they are breaking the law, as they are pretty sure they are not going to get stopped.

It is not going to change until the folks we have entrusted to protect us start protecting us.
