As governor, independent Angus King established a record of moderation and civility that led to a high degree of cooperation between parties for two terms. The result was some very productive years in Maine politics.

He orchestrated the political balance needed to go forward. He was rewarded with the overwhelming support of the Maine electorate.

The present congressional fighting has led to an uncertainty, wasted time and money, stalling and failure to address major issues. Congress is like two highly partisan baseball teams, playing without umpires.

If you watch the television ads, read and listen to political reports, it is obvious that the only hope for umpire involvement is the election of independent candidates such as former Gov. King.

Umpires don’t win the game, but they are the best chance we have to keep things from turning into complete chaos.
