SOUTH PARIS — Mike Mageles threw a tidy three-hit shutout, registering only one strikeout and needing only 62 pitches Saturday, helping Bessey Motors complete a Zone 3 American Legion baseball doubleheader sweep of Brunswick with a 4-0 victory.
Bessey belted Brunswick in the opener, 13-4, behind a 13-hit attack. Jordan Croteau clubbed three hits, including a double. Dylan Cox added a triple and a single. Matt Beauchesne and Nick Bowie each contributed two hits. Ryan Salerno, Trent Anderson and Jesse Bennett each singled twice for Brunswick against winning pitcher Ian MacFawn. Beauchesne ripped a double and a triple to back Mageles in the nightcap. Croteau added a double and Cox smacked a triple among eight hits for Bessey (8-4).
Smith-Tobey edges Mechanic Falls
POLAND — Smith-Tobey rallied in the seventh inning in each game to sweep a doubleheader with Mechanic Falls, 4-3 and 11-10, in Zone 3 American Legion action.
Trailing 3-1 in the first game, Smith -Tobey scored three in the seventh to pull ahead of Mechanic Falls and make a winner of starting pitcher Ryan Lathrop. Trent Charnock pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
Connor King went 2 for 3 with a home run for Mechanic Falls, while Dillon Douglass and Zak Johnson each belted a double.
Mechanic Falls came back from a 9-5 deficit to take an 10-9 lead in the sixth inning of the second game, but Smith-Tobey answered with a pair in the seventh to pull off its second one-run win.
Zach Groat went 3 for 5 with a homer and Brendan Glass added a double to lead Smith-Tobey. Zak Johnson led Mechanic Falls’ 15-hit attack by going 4 for 5. Connor King went 3 for 4, while Jake Simard, Lucas Johnson and Douglass all doubled.
