PORTLAND — Second-seeded Mike Hill, 21, of Topsham, three-time Maine interscholastic champion, upset top rated Ben Cox, 6-1, 6-1, to capture the Men’s Open Singles title at the 40th annual Maine Tennis Association Championships, at the Waynflete Sports Complex.
Hill, currently the number one singles player at Brown University, used a booming first serve and powerful groundstrokes to control the match. Cox, 32, a former University of Michigan star and current teaching professional, had downed Hill in their only previous meeting.
Hill earned his place in the finals by beating third seeded Brian Mavor, 6-0, 6-1, while Cox topped fourth seeded Tyler Adams, 6-1, 6-2, in the other semifinal.
The No. 1 seeded team of Aaron Bergeron of Gorham and Hugo Robinson of Portland captured its third consecutive tournament by eliminating Josh Pendergast and Marius King of Bangor, 6-4, 7-6(5) in the Men’s Open Doubles final.
Other winners included: Karolina Pierko, Saco, Women’s Open Singles; Pierko and Elisa Whittier, Auburn, Women’s Open Doubles; Sonu Bhatia, Portland, Men’s 35+ Singles; Ron Chicoine, Lewiston, Men’s 45+ Singles; and Art Goldsmith, Denmark, Men’s 55+ Singles.
